Reflections for Week 5 (2T)

For the 2T, currently they are learning construction of triangles, quadrilaterals and bisectors. Perhaps this is a more hands-on topic for them, thus the students are quite on-tasked and they will ask for help when they have no idea how to go about doing the construction. Most of the students do not have much problems with angle bisectors as it seems to be the easiest for them. As for triangles and quadrilaterals, the main problem for students is that they get confused when asked to measure and construct angles. They do not know which side to measuring and thus tend to make mistakes in this. As for constructing the length, most are ok with it. For quadrilaterals, sometimes students are required to ensure that their lines are parallel and they find this section a bit tough too.

However, on the whole, the class can be seen to be trying their best at constructing and I will go round to the students one by one to help and correct their mistakes. Hopefully they are able to remember what they have learnt and apply when necessary.

Reflections for Week 5 (3E)

For this week, the section which I covered is mainly standard form for the Sec 3E classes. Generally, most students are able to convert from standard form to ordinary notation and vice versa without much problems. There are very weak students who need a lot of practise and revision for their previous maths concepts and thus they find anything new difficult to grasp. As this section tends to be quite dry, worksheets with short stories were given to students and they were required to answer a number of questions (sort of like a comprehension for them, but in maths form). The students find it a change and they are able to enjoy the stories while learning how to perform the various operations on standard form too.

For their lesson on Thursday, I was away for competition so I prepared a surprise class test on Indices. Some are able to do quite well for the test while others have totally forgotten the laws of indices once we start on standard form. I personally feel that these students lack practise and do not revise their work regularly. Perhaps I would get these group of students to stay back every week to reinforce the concepts they have learnt for the various chapters and drill them with practices so they do not forget how to tackle the different problems given.
